This post is going to be one of three posts...the next one will come tomorrow (as I am shut up in the house with no chance of going anywhere, thanks to the 7 inches of snow >.<) and the third sometime after that. I've no idea when. But I digress. :)
I've been thinking: What is it that makes a Holmesian a Holmesian?
I believe the simple definition of "Holmesian" is simply "One who ardently admires Sherlock Holmes."
But I really think that there's more to Holmesians than just admiring Holmes.
I think that a true Holmesian can be defined by the following:
~Ardent admiration for Holmes himself (as I've stated)
~Admiration for the canon as a whole
~Politeness (I have noticed that Holmesians generally tend to be quite polite and conscious of other people's feelings)
~Openness to experience other versions and interpretations of Holmes and his stories (I myself am learning this, as you have probably noticed)
~Intelligence (I say this because most Holmesians are incredibly intelligent, which makes for pleasant conversation :D)
I must now take my leave, but I leave you with this post to ponder, and I look forward to hearing what your thoughts are about what I have said. If you have anything to add to my list, or if you disagree about anything I've said, feel free to comment :)

Well I thought I was a Holmesian, sooo that doesn't mean I'm intelligent? :-)
ReplyDelete(note) I think you can be a Holmesian without being an ardent lover of Holmes. I certainly not quite as crazy as you for example Bre about Holmes, but I do like him. In fact (heresy!!!) I actually Lord Peter Wimsey better. Still I do consider myself a Holmesian. :-)
Lady Amy..perhaps I should tell you love to argue...(weird, usually I get myself into an argument, but the other day somebody really and truly asked for it. That was a good day. :-D )
I guess you had better define ardent. :-D
You are a Holmesian, Amy. And you're intelligent too :)
ReplyDeletelol I'm pretty durn crazy about him, lol :)
I was defining 'ardent' as more along the lines of you really really like him :) You asked for a kiss in our story, so that must mean you really like him, haha.
(fyi, I LOVE LORD PETER WIMSEY! He's fantastic :D)
See, the purpose of this post was to see what everyone else had to say. So I appreciate your comments :) I have no problem with arguing, as long as it's friendly arguing. lol
I think to be a Holmesian, you also have to have a sense of Holmes-ness. Like you have to somewhat notice things like Holmes does...even in the tiniest bit. It ties all of the elements you have stated, Bre, together. If you ardently admire Holmes, if you admire the canon as a whole, and if you are intelligent (the other ones do matter, but not as much as these) Holmes-ness *has* to rub off on you. And if you argue that you are not intelligent, that is false. If you read Holmes thou art intelligent. :)
ReplyDeleteThere are my thoughts. Ponder them...lol
Yes, Mary! That's wonderful. ("If you read Holmes thou art intelligent.") :D
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree...Holmes-ness does rub off on one, which is a good thing.
*ponders Mary's thoughts*
Bre, the kiss was so I don't get left out, not that I mind getting a kiss. :-) Now a kiss from Lord Peter....:-)
ReplyDeleteGood point Mary, before I found Lord Peter, I did notice lots of stuff, I still do, but not as much. Especially not if I have my nose in a book. :-)
Lady Amy...give me your snow!!!...in her attic. :-D
lol :D You're funny, Amy.
ReplyDeleteAnd you may have my snow. I'm ready for it to go away :P
Take my snow and bring it to the Alps and go skiing. =D I am not involved in who accompanies you. lol *is reminded of past incidents* lol
ReplyDeleteI think you have a good definition there. :) IMHO, I think it really comes down to the first 2 points--admiration of Holmes and admiration of the books.
