My Sherlock Holmes Review

I DIDN'T HATE IT! YAAAAAAY! In all seriousness, I did, in fact, enjoy it.

The characterization of Holmes, while being deplorably scruffy and unkempt, was surprisingly better than I was anticipating. It's very obvious that Robert Downey Jr. studied former interpretations of the detective; definitely saw Jeremy Brett and Basil Rathbone similarites in his gestures and facial expressions. This Holmes did seem to be more emotionally needy than my personal version.

Watson was loverly. The polar opposite of the bumbling, comic foil, Nigel Bruce, Jude Law's Watson was the adult to Holmes' spoiled child. Super capable, intelligent, and all in all quite nice. The pair's banter was the highlight of the movie.

What was the point of Irene Adler? Honestly? She added very little to the story, besides being a vehicle for the introduction of he-who-must-not-be-named. Annoying.

Lestrade was MY MR. PANCKS! While not my Lestrade, he did a wonderful job. Though I cannot abide the pronunciation of Lestrade as "Lestrawd," personally.

Mary Morstan was very good, not putting up with Holmes' nonsense and such. We'll have to find a nicer way to dispose of her than we were planning. ;)

The villian was an excellent actor, of course (he could have played Holmes, in my opinion), but he was given such a sub-par role. "Oooo, I'm gonna psyche you out, Sherlock Holmes! Mwahahahaha!"

If it were not for the excellent characterizations, and were I not such an avid Holmesian, the plot of the movie would not have really excited me. Hmm, let's steal the plot of National Treasure and Indiana Jones, shall we? *shrugs*

If you're going to see a riveting action movie, I might tell you to stay home. If you're going to see Holmes, get thee to a movie theater, pronto.

  1. Oh goodness, I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only one who absolutely despises that pronunciation of Lestrade's name :D I like...Leh-strayd. lol

I agree with pretty much everything you said, you already knew that though :D

  2. That pronunciation drove me nuts...it's like JB calling Irene Adler "Er-en-ay" or whatever...grr

Yes, I liked it very much as well. :)

    ReplyDelete
  3. Um, he says Ir-ay-nuh. =D And yes, that's annoying, especially since she *is*, after all, American and they would use that pronunciation, not the French pronunciation...but I digress. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  4. Whatever...I haven't seen that episode since last September. I did my best; don't judge me. jk Yeah, but on that episode she has a British accent...but is supposed to be American...but has her name pronounced in the French style...hmm, some people were quite mixed-up, as it seems to me.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I thought she had an American accent...I'm pretty sure she does...I judge you. =D

    ReplyDelete
  6. Eh..sorry, Grace, but I have to side with Mary. It's slightly British :P

    ReplyDelete
  7. SILENCE! THOU SHALT NOT CONTRADICT ME! lol

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm sorry! I'm just stating the truth! *holds hands up in defense* Pray, do not come at me with a crowbar...please...

    ReplyDelete
  9. ...I was sorely tempted, but I shall not. ;D

    ReplyDelete
  10. I *shalt* contradict thee, foul murderous wretch! *is not in posession of a crowbar so steals Grace's and brandishes it most fearsomely*

    ReplyDelete
  11. Grace! Bre's movie review was cooler 'cause it was longer and had a picture. I dunno...I just felt like bringing that into the light if it was not already realized by the world. jk =P =D

    ReplyDelete
  12. Ha, I scorn your attempt at fearsomeness! *dropkicks Mary, stuffs her in a sack, which she then shoves into the trunk of Watson's Ferrari* You PANSY! =D

    ReplyDelete
  13. Gee, talk about familial loyalty. =P Not that I disagree (lol), but still...way to crush my already-fragile self esteem. *goes to weep*

    ReplyDelete
  14. *sticks tongue out while in the Watson's trunk and can tell where they are driving because she is oh-so-very smart like her Holmes who happens to also be in the trunk*

    ReplyDelete
  15. why did I just say "the Watson's trunk"? huh...

    ReplyDelete
  16. ...Why on earth is Holmes in the trunk, woman?

    ReplyDelete
  17. (btw, the "Watson's trunk" made me die laughing just now. awesomeness.)

Grace...must be the same reason that Holmes is in the closet with you, doing 'baritsu.'

    *smirks*

I'm about ready to take him back, with all this nonsensical blabbering about stuffing me in the trunk and coming at me with baritsu and a crowbar. Or maybe I'll just finish carrying out my threat, which is already half carried out...*evil grin*

And Mary, thanks for liking my review. Though Grace's is perhaps more...interesting, and funny. lol

  18. I think we've gone through the whole "all of us are crazy" thing before...yeah, we have.

Holmes was in the trunk because he deduced that I would be thrown in, so he thought: "Hey, Mary is gonna be thrown in Watson's trunk by her nasty sister Grace at any moment. I should go there first and then I shall meet her when she is violently thrown in; and I will attend to her wounds from being thrown about in a most unseemly fashion by her horrid, nasty sister Grace Brennan. Yeah..." haha :)

  19. False. You lie. Keep yo' forked tongue behind yo' teeth, girrrrl.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Dude...I think Gandalf totally tells Wormtongue to keep his forked tongue behind his teeth...yeah, he does. (Except Gandalf knows how to fully say his words...haha jk)

Well, I'm still sitting here in Watson's Ferarri, and Holmes beseaches that I ask you to let us out soon. (Not that the situation is dislikable, quite the contrary, but there is only so much air here in Watson's trunk...we do not wish to expire.)

    ReplyDelete
  21. lol you guys are CRAZY ! :-) man....I think I shall unlock the trunk and let you out, putting Bre and Grace in instead. Ha, so there. :-) say thanks Mare child :-)

Side note, my Mary is now Honeybell Minneola Tangeola :-) be glad you aren't called that. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thank you, Lady Amy. Yeah, so Grace and Bre have no one else in the trunk with them, I assume? Here, while Grace and Bre are locked in the trunk, Watson, Holmes, Lady Amy and myself are all going on a jolly picnic in the park. Have fun in that there trunk. *laughs evilly*

Oh, I am indeed very glad I am not called that; it makes Mare-child quite agreeable. :) hehe

    ReplyDelete
  23. SILENCE! Forsooth, he is in this very trunk. And I can say my words just fine.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Nay; he is right here on this beautiful green hillside with the beams of light from the romantic sunset are highlighting his features...and he, Watson, Lady Amy and I are all having a simply wonderful time on our holiday, which we have decided will take an extended amount of time, in which case we will not be back from our picnic-turned-holiday for quite some time. So you and Bre had better get used to being in that trunk; Watson's leaving it behind during our holiday. :)

Am I not correct in all I say, Lady Amy? We may have planned without you but Holmes assured me you would have no objection. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ha! Mycroft and I will interrupt said picnic/holiday and demand that Holmes return to 221b on a matter of extreme importance. Holmes's patriotism and sense of duty will outweigh his love of picnics. :D

    ReplyDelete
  26. What about his love of...Mare-child?! Fine, he'll go, but at his bidding, I shall be accompanying him. =D haha But Lady Amy and Watson are still on holiday, if that option is favorable to you, Lady Amy. :) Or you can come with Holmes and I. :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thanks Madam Mary, but Watson and I wish to come along, besides which Holmes couldn't bear to leave me. :-) Oh and thanks for the picnic, it was loverly. :-) Bre, Mycroft when he heard that I was coming along stopped his evil plans, and we all going to...the Alps, to go skiing!!! :-) Enjoy the trunk, I dropped a handful snow in, you can have fun throwing it or eating it. :-)

    Lady Amy :-)
P.S. am I not correct in all this Madam Mary? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. sorry, Mycroft when he heard I was coming found out that the matter of extreme importance was all a hoax, so put you and Grace back in the trunks and came skiing with all of us.
And Mary, Holmes said you liked skiing, I hope he was correct.

    Lady Amy

This beginning to sound like King of the Hill. :-D

    ReplyDelete
  29. "Holmes, Mycroft, and Watson" are imposters...the REAL Holmes, Mycroft, and Watson, are having a tea party with me at Baker Street. =D

    ReplyDelete
  30. False, Marian. I thinketh thou art experiencing illusions...if you come and visit all of us in the alps, Dr. Watson can check it out for you. ;) And maybe he will say that you are well enough to ski with us!

Yes, Amy! You are correct in your reports of the current happenings! I have never skiied, but Holmes is right in telling you that I like it..if he teaches me. =D (Holmes is never wrong.)

How's that there trunk doing for ya, Grace and Bre? =P

    ReplyDelete
  31. Forsooth, I knowest not of what you speak; Holmes has been in this trunk the entire time.

    ReplyDelete
  32. *dies*

However did I miss all of this??!

I am not in the trunk, you must have the wrong Bre. I have been in the closet, with Holmes, doing baritsuuuuu the entire time :P (*breaks down into a fit of hysterical giggling with Grace*)

Sorry to be the one to break it to you that every single one of you has been hanging out with an impostor Holmes. I'd be creeped out, if I were you. Flee while you're still alive. If you wish to remain alive, that is. Who knows when he'll strike!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Watson is very worried about Grace's and your mental health Bre. He has prevailed on Holmes to allow to go back and get you to so he can examine you. If you behave and admit that the hallucinations are fake he will allow to skiing with us...and are we having fun...IF!..:-)

    Am I not right Mary.

    Lady Amy...SKIING!!!! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Watson is coming back for you two in the trunk I mean. :-)

As Mary can of course confirm. :-D

    ReplyDelete
  35. pshaw, I greatly dislike skiing anyway. And nobody can confirm anything, cause I do what I like, and so does Holmes. And right now we like us some baritsuuuuuuuu.

    lol

For your info, Holmes doesn't particularly like cold weather, so I don't believe he'd have that good of a time skiing. *shrugs* You can keep having fun with Watson, though. We're going where it's warm.

Oh yah, Grace can come too, if she so chooses. And anyone else who doesn't want to hang out with creepy impostors.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Amy, I am most sorry for me and Watson's hurried departure from the slopes before I could confirm all of your truths...I was feeling ill and Watson was most concerned for my health, and Holmes insisted we head back to the ski lodge. I am still recovering, but Watson, Holmes and yourself have been most cheerful company. :)

Yes, dear Bre, we are aware that Holmes is not very fond of chilly climates, but he is willing to go to the ends of the earth for us. =P :) And, fyi Bre, we took you out of the closet a loooooong time ago. Me thinks you have been dreaming while stuffed in that trunk with Grace. Grace, we'll be bringing Watson to check on you both when I am feeling better. Seriously...you both think you are in different places with Holmes at the same time, when in actuality, he is having a vonderful time here in the Alps at this here cozy ski lodge. :) Sorry to burst your gals' bubbles, but it's true.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Mary...*waves smelling salts beneath your nose*

I think you were being delusional! And delirious! You fainted! And had a weird dream...

Grace, help me out here. Holmes is with us, helping us take care of you...helloooooo...

This is really quite unfortunate, there had been talk of including you girls in our next crazy, random story but I think we had better refrain so as not to ruin your health more...I'd rather not send you all to the asylum...perhaps we'll just stick with a sequel, with the Holmes-Bre-Grace-Watson quadrup...o..quadrupo. lol It might be for the better of y'all, till you can recover from your delusional visions.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Knocks out Grace and Bre...sorry girls but Watson said it was the best solution.
BRE YOU DON'T LIKE SKIING!!!! agh....no no...not that. :-) Trust me you will like skiing. Oh and Mary and I just might write out own little story with Holmes....you know that's a good idea...:-)
Mycroft is very anxious for you to recover, and suggested sleigh rides...and other fun things. :-)
    Mary I'm glad you're feeling better. :-)

    Lady Amy..NOT HALLUCINATING. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh goodness, when one is in denial of hallucinations it makes it all the more difficult to recover. Holmes advises that you settle down and read and try to get your mind off of it. I think it's a good idea.

And seriously, who knocks me out? I know self-defense. So...you try to knock us out, and I may employ my mad board-breaking skills :P Yes, I can break a board, actually, I broke a set of three in one kick during a TKD test, so you may wanna watch out.

I feel bad for you girls. Though the doctors in the white coats do treat y'all nicely... *shrugs innocently*

Oh yes, and do write up your own story, but it won't be posted here, sorry. I have a feeling it will be slightly insane...no insanity on this blog, nope nope nope.

    :P

    ReplyDelete
  40. You know, why don't we all just stay where we are, close our eyes for ten seconds, then all go back to Baker Street and I betcha the real Holmes and Watson, where ever they were, who ever they may be, will be there with some lovely tea for us and a case for us all to help with. :) Can we all just be happy people now and stop knocking each other out, stuffing each other in car trunks, commencing battles of wit, and surrendering each other's lives to brainless people in white coats? *smiles in a beam of hope that this plea may be accepted by all*

    ReplyDelete
  41. Sounds good to me, Mary!

    All in favor, say "I!"

    I!

    (haha)

Anyone who insane enough to reject Mary's very sane proposal may take their leave presently.

Though...I don't think the stuffing of people in Watson's Ferrari will ever stop. That's a much too funny inside joke :P lol

    ReplyDelete
  42. I!!

You know this tea is pretty good over here. :-) And now can we pretty please be in the story? :-)

    Lady Amy
P.S. stuffs Bre in Watson's trunk!! :-P well maybe not. I didn't know Watson has a Ferrari. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  43. lol I don't much like tea, may I have STARBUCKS instead?

    *dies laughing*

Aherm. Anywho, yes, Watson has a Ferrari. That was the very beginning of the evolution of the Ferrari/trunk joke :P

And oh yes, we already have roles planned for each of you :P Well, the frequenters at least. lol Amy, Marian, and Mary, sides Grace and I. *shrugs* We'll see what our random minds come up with :D

    ReplyDelete
  44. ick..I hate coffee, and barely tolerate tea. :-)

whooo boy..I wonder what you will do. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thank you for the acceptance of my declared sane proposal. I was getting sick of all the hallucinations, doctors and violence. lol It was kinda fun/funny though. I don't suppose any of us (especially Bre and Grace) will ever, ever stop stuffing people in Watson's Ferrari trunk. =D

YAY!!! WE GET TO BE IN THE STORY 'CAUSE WE'RE NOT CRAZY!!! *does a joyful dance in her nonexistant snuggie* Is my name Emmy Possum? jk If you do allow us any information on the story, would you let us all know what our names are/will be? (I guess I'm fine if I'm not Emmy Possum...but if I am, that'd be great too.) =D

    ReplyDelete
  46. I used to like tea...I guess I still do, but I had it just a few hours preceeding a very icky illness, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to drink it again for a while. But coffee definitely holds a happy place in my heart. :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Allow me to offer services as violinist playing gently in the background provided I get a kiss and a dance. :-) I can also play the piano if that helps. :-)

Lady Amy...why oh why did I let my teacher sign me up for OMEA.....

    ReplyDelete
  48. Uh...and I can offer my services to perform the ballet from Act III of tonight's opera...lol Or I can be the soloist accompanying Lady Amy...but I insist upon at least a dance with Holmes. (If you do have another ball, then Holmes is gonna end up kissing, like, four people...hmm...I'm not sure of the propriety in this.)
