The Cardboard Box

Last night, I was finally able to bring myself to watch the Cardboard Box (the JB version). I previously hadn't been able to watch it...it might sound kind of weird, but the last episodes are my least favorite, the main reason being that Jeremy looked so sick, and you could tell he was dying, and it was really depressing.

But after watching it, I was really happy. For some reason, it almost seemed as if Jeremy was given a last burst of good health, and he really put on the best performance possible for that last episode. I almost cried, not because I was depressed, but because it was such a relief for me that he was able to do SUCH a good job with that last episode of him as Sherlock Holmes. It was almost like he was back to the Brett of the "Adventures..." cept he looked much older. But he was really able to pull it off...and though in some of the episodes directly previous to the Cardboard Box you could REALLY tell he was sick, and even the Mazarin Stone, in which he's only in it for 2 or 3 minutes total, he really looked back to normal in this one. I was so happy.

Aside from that, the Cardboard Box was one of my least favorite stories from the canon. I'm not too keen on severed human ears, you know. But Granada did a really great job with it, I think.

Such are my musings for today. I'm anxious to hear your thoughts on this episode...I hope this prompts some good discussion, I'm in a discussing mood today (lol). We don't have to talk about Jeremy being sick or anything, unless everyone wants to. lol But anyhow, what do you think about the story in general? Do you have any thoughts on the way Granada portrayed it? Just curious :)

  1. Cardboard Box is one of my least favourite stories, because of the severed ears thing. I like weird stories, but that one was just gross and gory.

As for the Granada episode, I kinda like the Christmasy aspect they added (although an odd choice of a story to make Christmasy!), with Holmes decorating his chemistry stuff and all. ;) IIRC, that's also the episode where Holmes is trying to think of a present for Watson, and ends up getting him a weird cape thing, lol! So there's good parts in it, and I think Ciaran Hinds was a great casting choice for the character of Jim Browner. However, I still find the story quite disturbing, and I don't watch it as often as, say, Red-Headed.

The Memoirs episodes are my least favourite, I'd say, whereas Casebook was better. I wouldn't mind rewatching The Golden Pince-Nez, however, as I think I only watched that once. Actually, I kinda forgot how that story goes, so there's a bonus reason for rewatching. ;D

  3. Dude, I think I saw the Cardboard Box before Grace *and* Bre. *does a victory dance* Now I can say I saw an episode before both of you!! ha! (Usually it seems like you two see a lot of them before I do, judging from the blog and stuff...and Grace telling me about episodes...)

@Bre- Eew...I hate that episode/story!!! It's just gross, as everyone has been saying. They portrayed it well, I think, but the story just isn't pleasant at all. (Except for the fun Christmas-y parts!) Yeah...I like how you describe JB in that episode...like his final burst of amazingness and stuff. :) *wipes away a tear while thinking about it*

@Marian- I love when he gets Watson that cape-ish thing!!! =D That's like the best part when Watson walks in and Holmes is like: "You're wearing it!" and he smiles like this: :). Yeah...I didn't know that Jim Browner was played by Ciaran Hinds! =D That totally like made my day...

@Grace- Go watch it. It's gross, but go watch it. Oh, and that lady from Cranford is in it and is young. The two sisters, the one who likes Dr. Harrison, the silly one, her older sister is in the Cardboard Box. Hope that made sense and you know who I'm talking about...

  4. @Marian - Yes! The cape! I almost forgot about the cape :D And how happy it made Holmes, that Watson liked it :) It was so cute. And gosh, is that what he was doing? I couldn't figure out what he was draping all over his test tubes...lol but then again, I was watching it on youtube, so the screen wasn't very big. lol

@Grace - Yes, go see it. Pronto.

@Mary - Wow...you're good! lol It is rather gross, though I'm thankful they didn't show too many close ups of the ears. *shivers*

I also loved the comment about the Christmas tree..."What IS that?" Watson's like: "It's a Christmas tree." And Holmes just looks at it. *giggles* There were definitely some good parts that I liked in it :)

  5. Wow...I wasn't at all grossed out by the ears, I guess I dunno know...I don't get disgusted much except like reading abortion procedures...need I say more. Off topic yes, but does anybody here know all the ways they kill those cute babies...it's nauseating...I wish HOlmes would like find the guilty one and get rid of abortion or something. :-)
Side note, I saw a company the other day that was called I believe HOlmes Printing. weird. :-)
